Umbilical Cord Care

Memorial Family Care Birthing Center provides advice on umbilical cord care during and after staying at Memorial.

Do parents need to take special care of the umbilical cord?

There is not a lot you have to do with the umbilical cord. It naturally will dry and shrink on its own. Somewhere between one and two weeks, it will fall off, which is probably the most surprising part to the parents when they just find it at some point. You don't have to clean it with alcohol. Most pediatricians recommend that you don't do tub baths before it falls off, but you need to speak with them about how they want you to care for it. One thing we do tell parents is if it ever gets softer or if it has any kind of discharge or funny smell that they call the pediatrician right away.
